Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP), commonly known as geothermal heating systems, use the constant temperature of the the earth’s crust that is heated from the sun. These heat transfer systems come in a few different configurations:
Horizontal Loop:
Where space is permitted, a horizontal loop can be escavated to minimize installation costs. The horizontal loop is typically 6-8 ft under the ground and at a loop length of 300 ft. per ton of heating/cooling.
Open Loop:
Where an abundance of well water can be found at a relatively consistent temperature, an open loop becomes a viable option. Water is used from the well and put back in another well location.
Vertical Loop:
Vertical loops are useful when space is a premium, such as in an urban centre. They are typically drilled at 200 ft per ton.
